North Carolina National Guard Soldier Spotlight from Kuwait

By Story by Lt. Col. Cindi King 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team

The North Carolina National Guard spotlights U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Meredith Kiser, a combat medic in the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team, North Carolina National Guard, deployed for Operation Spartan Shield in the Middle East.

Kiser was presented a general officer coin by U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Ellis, commander of Task Force Spartan and the 38th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, Dec. 27, 2019 for her outstanding work during a recent command inspection of the unit's combat medic training program.

Kiser, a Lenoir, North Carolina native, has served in the North Carolina Army National Guard for nearly 20 years. She is the brigade medical operations non-commissioned officer in charge. This mobilization is her third, with previous deployments to Iraq in 2003 and 2008.

"The best part of my job is I get to help people," said Kiser. "I enjoy being that person who is able to assist people and make sure they are taken care of."

Kiser said she was grateful for the support of her parents and from members of her unit. She said being a member of the National Guard enabled her to finish her degree in healthcare administration.

"I like the friendships I've made all over the world and the experiences I've had in the military," said Kiser. "It's always exciting to learn something new."

Kiser has two sons, Aiden and Luke. She said she missed them very much, but looks forward to a family trip to Disney world when she returns from deployment.

"I miss snuggling with my kids and sleeping in my own bed," said Kiser. "It's the little things you miss the most when you're away from home."
